Maroon women's basketball reaches 10-straight wins with 73-52 victory at Emory

Box Score

ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Chicago women's basketball team picked up its 10th-straight win and produced another strong defensive effort in a 73-52 victory over Emory University on Sunday.

The Maroons improved to 16-6 overall and 10-1 in conference action. The Eagles fell to 11-11 overall and 3-8 in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

UChicago ended up limiting Emory to 27 percent shooting from the field. That is the fifth opponent that the Maroons have held to less than 30 percent shooting this season. The visitors also blocked nine shots, which is their fourth-straight game with at least seven blocks.

Both offenses took some time to get going in the first half. The two teams combined for eight points in the opening six minutes. Then junior guard Caitlin Moore made a layup and drew a foul for a three-point play to tie the score at 7-7. UChicago took control from there and outscored Emory 15-2 over the next five minutes. Sophomore forward Britta Nordstrom contributed a three-pointer and a layup to the point streak.

An 8-2 run later in the half put the Maroons ahead 27-15. Back-to-back layups from senior forward Claire Devaney in the final minute gave UChicago a 35-24 lead when halftime rolled around. Devaney tallied 12 points in the half and the defense held the home team to 20.9 percent shooting.

A quick 10-0 boost early in the second half gave UChicago a 45-28 lead. Senior forward Ellie Greiner and sophomore guard Stephanie Anderson made three-pointers in that time. The double-digit lead was never relinquished and the largest lead of the day was 27 points. Greiner made 4 of 5 shots in the second half for all 10 of her points. She also blocked three shots on the afternoon.

The Maroons turned the ball over 21 times as Emory's trapping defense garnered 15 steals. The Eagles turned the ball over 17 times themselves. UChicago won the rebounding battle 47-38, as well as points in the paint 38-22.
