ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Chicago swimming and diving teams faced off with conference rival Washington University-St. Louis in a dual meet on Saturday, as the host Bears emerged with both team wins.
Washington-St. Louis edged out UChicago 152-148 on the women's side, which came down to the final relay race of the day. On the men's side, the Bears topped the Maroons 173-115.
UChicago's divers excelled on the women's side as junior Natalie DeMuro (1st, 264.85), sophomore Anna Girlich (2nd, 264.40) and freshman Agnes Lo (3rd, 256.05) all posted NCAA regional qualifying scores on the one-meter board. Lo also won the three-meter dive with a score of 262.15.
All told, the Maroon women won seven total events on the afternoon. Freshman Audrey Mason was a double winner in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.08) and 1,650-yard freestyle (17:54.96). Senior Maya Scheidl took the 100-yard freestyle victory (52.71) and also swam a leg on the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.08) alongside sophomore Naomy Grand'Pierre, senior Alison Wall and freshman Yifan Mao. Freshman Nicole Garcia rounded out the women's winners in the 100-yard butterfly (57.61).
The UChicago men also picked up seven wins. Freshman Aaron Guo pulled off a triple in different strokes with wins in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:52.53), 200-yard backstroke (1:54.11) and 400-yard IM (4:10.63). Freshman Reona Yamaguchi tied WashU's Michael Lagieski with a dead heat in the 200-yard breaststroke with equal times of 2:07.00. The three other victories came via sophomore Alexander Farrell (100-yard freestyle), freshman Taye Baldinazzo (500-yard freestyle) and junior Dean Boures (three-meter dive).
