Maroon baseball loses pitching duel at Emory 3-1

Box Score

ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Chicago baseball team hung close throughout Tuesday afternoon's game, but ultimately fell to Emory University 3-1 on Tuesday.

The loss dropped the Maroons to 3-4, while improving the No. 7-ranked Eagles to 18-6.

Emory pitcher Billy Dimlow turned in eight innings of two-hit, one-run ball to improve his personal record to 5-0 on the campaign. Freshman second baseman Max Brzostowski had the only two hits off Dimlow – both singles. In the ninth inning, junior first baseman Thomas Prescott singled off the closer Kyle Monk who was on for the save. Prescott's single was the visitors' third and final hit of the afternoon.

Sophomore outfielder Max Larsen got things started off for the Maroons in the third by drawing a leadoff walk. The free pass brought up Brzostowski, who singled to put runners at the corners with nobody out and the top of the order due up. Junior outfielder Nicholas Toomey hit a grounder to the shortstop who, playing at double-play depth, elected to try to turn two. Toomey used his speed to beat out the relay throw and the fielder's choice gave him the RBI. Emory was able to get out of the inning, however, when Dimlow rolled a double play ball.

The Eagles came right back at UChicago in the bottom half of the third courtesy of a two-out rally. Dylan Eisner worked a walk then swiped second, putting himself in scoring position. Then the home team's three-hole hitter Brian Hernandez doubled home Eisner to tie up the score. UChicago freshman pitcher Joe Liberman responding by striking out the cleanup hitter to strand Hernandez in scoring position.

Liberman made his first start and second appearance of his collegiate career. He turned in 4.2 innings of seven-hit, three-run ball. He struck out two Eagles while allowing two free passes as well.

Emory scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, starting its rally with nobody on base and two outs once again. Eisner singled, then Hernandez hit another RBI double to bring him in. This time though, four-spot hitter Wilson Morgan wouldn't be left out of the two-run rally as he added a RBI single to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. That score would stand through nine innings.

Freshman Ravi Bakhai (2.1 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 2K, 0 R) and sophomore Chase Packard (1 IP, 0 R) were effective in relief of Liberman.
