MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The University of Chicago women's tennis team got off to a fast start at the ITA Division III National Team Indoor Championship, defeating Sewanee 7-2 on Friday afternoon.
The No. 10-ranked Maroons kept their perfect record intact at 8-0. The No. 13-ranked Tigers (4-1 record) absorbed their first defeat.
UChicago established itself right away in doubles by making quick work of Sewanee by scores of 8-1, 8-2 and 8-4. With the 3-0 doubles sweep, the Maroons turned their attention to singles, where they took the first set in all six matches. They would end up taking four out of the six, as the Tigers rallied back to win a pair in third-set super tiebreakers. Junior Ariana Iranpour (No. 1), freshman Marjorie Antohi (No. 2), sophomore Rachel Kim (No. 3) and freshman Alyssa Rudin (No. 6) were all victorious in straight sets.
"Sewanee was a step up for us in terms of level of play and I'm happy with the way we responded," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "To come out and get a sweep in doubles gave us a little breathing room in singles, which is always a bonus. I still don't think we've been forced to hit our top gear yet, but if we want to have a chance against Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow, we are really going to have to compete at our highest level."
