UChicago Women's Soccer Races Past Carroll 5-0

Box Score

CHICAGO – An unrelenting offensive surge allowed the University of Chicago to take control from the opening whistle and clinch a 5-0 triumph against Carroll University on Wednesday night.

After moving up to No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches national rankings this week, the Maroons (5-0) shut out their third opponent of the season. The Pioneers fell to 4-2.

The Stagg Field turf proved agreeable for the home team during the evening contest. UChicago blitzed Carroll, firing off 32 shots while only allowing two shots against its own defense. In their two home games this season, the Maroons have outshot opponents by a staggering 74-5 margin.

Junior midfielder Mia Calamari provided the opening goal of the night only 3:11 into the action. Junior defender Sydney Mathis found Calamari open near to the top of the box, and her subsequent left-footed shot found the upper right corner.

In the 12th minute, senior forward Caroline Olivero broke loose on the right wing and received the ball in space to make a move into the box. Her left-footed strike eluded the goalie positioned at the right post to push the lead to 2-0. Freshman defender Charlotte Waechter assisted on the play.

Coming out of halftime, UChicago kicked it up another gear and outshot the visitors 19-0 over the final 45 minutes. Just over a minute into the second half, junior midfielder Jenna McKinney ran onto Calamari's bouncing pass before the goalkeeper could arrive and delivered a straight-arrow chip that bounded off the left post and in. McKinney's goal was her team-high fifth of the year.

Two minutes after that, the Maroons made it 4-0 thanks to senior forward Madori Spiker. An expertly placed ball from sophomore midfielder Hanna Watkins cleared the last line of defense and found Spiker, who went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and scored.

The night's final tally came with five second left in the match. Sophomore defender Mackenzie Peebles' free kick was redirected by the foot of freshman forward Katie Jasminski past the diving goalie.

Corner kicks went 4-0 in favor of UChicago. Freshman Miranda Malone received her first career start in goal and came away with her first collegiate victory. She made one save in 80:55 and was relieved for the final 9:05 by sophomore Sydney Jones.
