SWEEP! UChicago Volleyball Downs #8 WashU to Finish UAA Weekend 3-0

Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass. – The No. 14 University of Chicago volleyball team made another strong statement for national attention after the Maroons concluded the first University Athletic Association Round Robin with not only a perfect 3-0 record, but Sunday's 3-0 sweep over rival and No. 8 Washington-St. Louis.

The Maroons (18-2, 3-0 UAA) pulled off a gritty 26-24 victory in Set 1 and then used that momentum to win the next two games by scores of 25-20 and 25-21.

Senior Sarah Muisenga and junior Anabella Pinton, as they did all weekend, led the Maroon offense with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, and sophomore setter Emma Griffith showed her ablity to spread the ball with 34 assists.

Benefiting from Griffith's distribution were junior Anne Marie Stifter (eight kills) and Madison Pearson (eight kills, .312 percentage).

Defensively, four Maroons helped keep WashU off-balance, as Katherine Wilson (14 digs), Griffith (16 digs), Stifter (13 digs), Muisenga (11 digs) and Temilade Adekoya (nine digs) covered the floor to keep the Bears at a .079 attack percentage.

With the Bears (11-4, 2-1) leading that first set, 20-15, UChicago began its comeback, first with a 3-0 run – courtesy of two kills by Muisenga and Audra Berg, to force a WashU timeout. The Bears would respond with two more points to go on to take a 23-19 lead and the set seeminginly in hand.

But UChicago didn't give in, outscoring the Bears 7-1 down the stretch – the last a kill from Griffith – to take what would be a momentum-crushing first game.

The second set proved to be the best for the UChicago defense, as Washington-St. Louis hit for a .000 percentage, recording eight kills with eight errors.

Other notable stats for the match: Wilson added three service aces, while three players had a solo block each – Stifter, Pearson and Audra Berg.

The victory marked the fourth victory over a higher-ranked team for UChicago.
