CHICAGO – The University of Chicago Department of Athletics & Recreation is pleased to announce the creation of the J. Laurence Costin Men's Basketball Fund.
The endowment was made possible by a generous gift from men's basketball alumnus Larry Costin, AB'66 (Class of 1963). The fund will serve as a permanent source of ongoing support for the men's basketball program and its priorities.
"Larry Costin has been actively engaged in the men's basketball program throughout his time as an alumnus," said UChicago Head Men's Basketball Coach Mike McGrath. "He, along with many of his former teammates, have set a great tone for how Maroon alumni can remain involved with their former teams. Larry has attended games and events to connect with present players and fellow alumni, assisted with our recruiting efforts, been available to mentor team members, and been an annual donor to the program. Most importantly, he has been an advocate, fan, and great friend. In creating the J. Laurence Costin Men's Basketball Fund, Larry has taken his support to a new level. We are so appreciative of this help and are excited to utilize it to help enhance the experience of our student-athletes."
Costin played basketball under the tutelage of legendary head coach Joseph Stampf during the early-1960s. He was also a member of the standout Maroon men's golf team. Costin attributes the friendships and community forged within the basketball team and the Psi Upsilon fraternity as crucial to helping him persevere through the challenging academic work and finish his degree.
