Box Score CLEVELAND – A go-ahead goal in the 85th minute gave the University of Chicago men's soccer team a 2-1 victory at Case Western Reserve University on Friday evening.
The No. 14-ranked Maroons improved to 11-4-1 overall and 3-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Spartans fell to 6-6-2 (1-3-1 UAA).
A quiet first half featured a combined five shots, with only one on goal. The two sides headed into halftime scoreless.
Then in the 60th minute, UChicago drew first blood off a corner kick. First-year Lyndon Hu swung the ball to the far post, where junior Naz Kabbani headed the ball to the middle for junior Richard Gillespie, who scored on a header of his own in front.
However, the home side knotted the proceedings back up 1-1 at the 77:22 mark off a double assist.
It was Vicente Mateus who played the hero with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. Sophomore Ryan Yetishefsky skillfully evaded four defenders on his run to the center of the attacking third, before passing back to the open Mateus. The senior midfielder set up his right foot and then drilled a 28-yard strike to the upper right corner that launched the Maroons back into the lead.
UChicago made one more save in the final minute to secure its third-straight win. Senior goalkeeper Calvin Walters (9-4-1 record) collected three total saves to earn the win.
CWRU edged the Maroons in shots taken (11-9) while the visitors held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
