Box Score AURORA, Ill. – The University of Chicago volleyball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 3-1 win at Aurora University on Saturday.
The No. 21-ranked Maroons improved to 15-8. The Spartans dropped to 18-8.
Aurora jumped out to a rapid 8-2 lead to start off the match. But the visitors came clawing back to within 20-19 late. The Spartans possessed a pair of set points up 24-22, but the Maroons reeled off two blocks and two kills to steal the opening set 26-24.
Sophomore Christine Jurgens contributed three kills and a block down the stretch to help secure the second set 25-21. Aurora hit .000 as a team with seven kills and seven errors.
In the third set, the Spartans returned the favor by wiping out a pair of UChicago set points to rally for a 27-25 win that extended the match. But the Maroons owned the fourth set throughout, running out to a lead of 18-9 before ending the proceedings at 25-17. Aurora was once again limited to a .000 hitting percentage in the set.
Jurgens set a new career high with 20 kills in the match. She swung at .347 rate and also added three blocks. Senior Temilade Adekoya produced a double-double with 12 kills and 19 digs to go with two aces. Junior Ellie Alden racked up 12 kills, seven digs and four blocks. Senior Audra Berg was a defensive force at the net with seven blocks on the afternoon.
Sophomore setter Maya Patel dished out 49 assists, served up three aces and posted 12 digs. First-years Bettye Igbenebor and Julia Craig finished with 15 and 13 digs, respectively.
UChicago hit .228 as a team and made 11 team blocks.
