Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The University of Chicago men's basketball team received plenty of scoring punch from the reserves in a 77-61 victory at Kalamazoo College on Tuesday night.
The Maroons improved to 5-4 while the Hornets fell to 3-5.
Rebounding is where UChicago shined brightest. The visitors snagged a season-high 52 rebounds in the game compared to only 29 boards for the hosts. The offensive glass featured even more of a disparity at 18-4 in favor of the Maroons. Those extra opportunities led to a 25 to 5 advantage in second-chance points.
The first half featured rough shooting percentages from both sides, as the two teams combined to make 29.8 percent of their field goals. The back-and-forth action featured eight lead changes and four ties. Down 26-23 with just over two minutes remaining before halftime, UChicago scored on three-consecutive possessions. Junior Skyler Twyman sank a pair of free throws, junior Bryce Hopkins scored off his own offensive rebound, and senior Zach Munson hit a trey to give the Maroons the lead for good at 30-26.
A 12-2 run to open the second half cemented UChicago's hold on the game. Sophomore Elliot Paschal scored the first five points, followed by an and-one conversion by Hopkins. Within five minutes, the Maroons owned a 46-30 lead. It only grew from there. UChicago's biggest lead of the night was a 24-point advantage at 60-36.
The backups got in on the action with gusto. The Maroons outscored the Hornets 44-25 in the bench points category, providing the majority of the evening's scoring. First-year Ezra Moos led the charge with a season-high 12 points which came from a quartet of three-pointers. Junior Alec Bryan was close behind with 10 points in nine minutes. All told, 12 different Maroons contributed to the final scoring tally.
Hopkins paced the team with 13 points and nine rebounds, including seven offensive boards. Paschal and Bryan put up 10 points each. Munson snagged nine rebounds as well.
UChicago shot 41.5 percent from the field, 35.1 percent from three-point range (13-37) and 66.7 percent from the free throw line (10-15). Kalamazoo shot 33.9 percent on field goals, 26.1 percent on threes (6-23) and 85.0 percent on free throws (17-20).
