Box Score LAS VEGAS – The University of Chicago men's basketball team took on its second nationally-ranked opponent in as many days on Wednesday evening. The Maroons ultimately fell to Maryville College 83-73 at the D3hoops.com Classic.
The Maroons dropped to 5-6 on the season. The No. 23-ranked Scots improved to 11-1.
Back-to-back layups by junior Bryce Hopkins and sophomore Elliot Paschal gave UChicago an 8-6 lead four minutes into the contest. But Maryville went on to score eight points in-a-row to go up 14-8. Senior Zach Munson eventually tied the score back up at 19-19 with a long-range jumper. Once again, the Scots had an answer and pulled away to 40-28. First-year Jackson Piotrowski scored twice in the paint to make the score 44-36 at halftime.
Maryville's efficient offensive attack would put the game out of reach with a 17-0 run over seven-and-a-half minutes of game time in the second half, ballooning the lead to 61-39. UChicago held a 10-1 advantage in offensive rebounds in the second-half action. However, the Maroons were held to 30.3 percent shooting compared to Maryville's 55 percent.
Hopkins recorded a double-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Paschal posted 17 points and four rebounds. Munson compiled 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
UChicago shot 36.7 percent from the field, 21.4 percent from three-point range (6-28) and 82.1 percent from the free throw line (23-28). Rebounds went in the Maroons' favor at 35-27, including a 16-6 edge on the offensive boards.
Maryville shot 54.9 percent on field goals, 70 percent on three-pointers (7-10) and 76.9 percent on free throws (20-26).
