Box Score CHICAGO – The University of Chicago women's lacrosse team extended its win streak with another impressive offensive showing in an 18-5 victory over visiting Aurora University on Saturday afternoon.
The Maroons are now 3-0 on the Stagg Field turf this season. The Spartans dropped to 3-3 on the year.
Efficiency was the standout characteristic of UChicago's offense. The home side scored 18 goals on 30 shots for a season-high .600 shot percentage. Ali Sheehy was the engine of the offense in the first half, as the junior midfielder scored three of the team's first five goals. She ended up a with a team-high five goals on six shot attempts.
Sheehy opened the scoring less than five minutes in by converting a free position shot, then added another 10 minutes in. Aurora got onto the board after 13 minutes of play to trail 3-1. UChicago promptly scored the next six in-a-row to seize definitive control of the proceedings. Sophomore Anneke Pulkkinen tallied two scores while junior attacker Lally Johnson put up a goal and three assists to help extend the lead to 9-1.
The Spartans finally found some momentum and scored twice in last five minutes of the half. But it was UChicago who finished strong. Sophomore midfielder Katie Large scored after an Aurora yellow card with 21 seconds left. Then junior attacker Isabelle Moran drew a foul and scored off the free position with six seconds remaining. Just like that, the Maroons were back in charge at 11-3.
There were fewer good offensive opportunities on both sides in the second half, but that didn't stop UChicago from scoring four of the next five to take a double-digit lead. Sophomore midfielder Zoe Torok scored twice and assisted another to put her team ahead 15-4 midway through the period.
A trio of Maroon tallies in the final seven minutes put a bow on the proceedings.
Aurora attempted to make things tough on UChicago clears with full pressure, but UChicago still converted 19 of 24 clears in the game. The visitors utilized their speed to go 15 of 18 in those scenarios.
Draw controls (13-12 Aurora) and fouls (26-25 Aurora) were nearly even. The physical gameplay featured a combined six yellows cards and a red card. However, the Maroons held definitive advantages in ground balls (23-11) and shots taken (30-18).
Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Feigen was a standout performer between the pipes. She made nine saves out of 14 shots on goal for a .643 save percentage, including some impressive stops on free position and other point blank attempts. Sophomore Kat Berritto finished off the final 12 minutes of play with one save. Junior defender Adriana Shutler paced the squad with five ground balls while junior Jordan Coan and sophomore Hailey Klinger collected four each.
Alongside Sheehy's five goals and one assist, Johnson posted seven points with two goals and five assists. Torok put up two goals, three assists and four draw controls. Pulkkinen buried three goals and Moran added two.
