Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A sizable first-half deficit hamstrung the University of Chicago men's basketball team in a 78-52 loss at University of Rochester on Friday evening.
The Maroons fell to 5-7 on the season and 0-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Yellowjackets improved to 9-3 overall, 1-1 in UAA games.
The hosts led wire-to-wire, jumping out to an 11-0 lead five minutes into the game. Junior Bryce Hopkins got the Maroons onto the scoreboard after that and was responsible for the team's opening six points. Less than eight minutes later, Rochester had expanded its advantage to 32-10. By the time halftime rolled around, the Yellowjackets were staked to a 42-17 lead.
Hopkins paced the visitors in the first half while the Maroons were limited to 24 percent shooting from the field. In the second half, first-year Arrish Bhandal took on the offensive load. The 6-foot-9 forward scored 13 points in 13 minutes off the bench as UChicago played Rochester evenly in the second half. The home side only outscored the Maroons by one in the final 20 minutes, but UChicago was unable to reduce the deficit to less than 20.
Hopkins finished with a team-high 16 points, while Bhandal was close behind with 15 points and seven rebounds.
In the final box score, UChicago shot 36.7 percent on field goals, 33.3 percent on three-pointers (8-24) and 75 percent on free throws (6-8). Rochester converted 53.3 percent of its field goals, 40 percent of its threes (6-15) and 53.3 percent of its free throws (8-15).
The Yellowjackets won the rebounding battle 35-30 and forced 20 Maroons turnovers while only committing eight themselves. They also held large margins in both points off turnovers (28-7) and points in the paint (48-18).
