Box Score ATLANTA – The University of Chicago men's basketball team tied its season high for three-pointers made, but couldn't hold off No. 25-ranked Emory University in an 83-68 loss on Saturday.
The Maroons dropped to 5-8 overall (0-2 in the University Athletic Association). The Eagles moved to 9-4 on the season and 1-1 in UAA play.
UChicago found its long-distance rhythm early, hitting 4 of 7 from three-point range in the opening 10 minutes. A trey by first-year Ezra Moos followed by a layup from junior Bryce Hopkins gave the Maroons their biggest lead at 19-14.
However, Emory answered in kind and embarked on a 15-2 run to recapture the advantage at 29-21. The host Eagles would hold the lead for the rest of the game – they went into halftime up 39-27. Hopkins scored seven points in the half and sophomore Leonardo Edo grabbed eight rebounds.
The Emory defense quickly transitioned into offense to begin the second half. UChicago turned the ball over on its opening three possessions and Emory's Logan Shanahan scored on the other end each time to rack up a quick seven points.
After missing eight-straight three-pointers to end the first half, the Maroons found their shooting stroke again in the final 20 minutes. They hit 9 of 17 from beyond the arc in the second half.
While UChicago scored 41 points in the second half, the Eagles kept chugging along. The home side expanded its lead into the 20s midway through the second half. Emory's ability to create havoc paid off throughout the game – the Eagles forced 18 turnovers and scored 21 points off those miscues. They also held a 21-0 lead in fast-break points.
Overall, the Maroons swished 13 three-pointers to tie their season best. They also led the rebounding category 43-34. However, Emory had double the number of points in the paint (36-18).
