Maroon Women's Basketball Loses 55-47 at Emory

ATLANTA – The University of Chicago women's basketball team absorbed a 55-47 loss on the road at Emory University on Saturday.

The Maroons fell to 7-6 overall and 0-3 in the University Athletic Association. The Eagles improved to 8-4 and 2-1 in conference play.

Junior Peyton Van Soest converted a layup and a three-pointer to make it 7-2 in the early going. The play evened out from there. Senior Kati Heller's layup in the final second of the first quarter made it 14-13 in favor of the Maroons.

Emory opened the second quarter by scoring seven-straight points to go up 20-14. Soon after, the Eagles took their biggest lead of the half at 23-16. UChicago soon countered with a 7-0 run of its own to tie things up. Senior Klaire Steffens scored in close to put her team back ahead 28-27 at the halftime break. Steffens and Van Soest shared the scoring load with seven points apiece, with the senior center grabbing eight rebounds.

The third quarter got away from the Maroons. The visitors committed nine turnovers in the period and shot 25 percent from the field. Emory went on an 8-0 streak to start the third. Junior Ashley Gao's jumper in the final seconds cut the deficit to 40-34 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Eagles continued to hold sway down the stretch, leading by 12 points at 50-38. UChicago got within five points in the final minute. However, Emory closed things out from there to clinch the win.

Steffens finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Junior Mallory Brodnik submitted eight points and eight rebounds. Van Soest tallied seven points and five rebounds.

The Maroons shot 31.1 from the field, 21.4 from beyond the arc (3-14), and 75.0 from the free-throw line (6-8). The Eagles shot 44.7 on field goals, 46.2 on three-pointers (6-13), and 70.0 on free throws (7-10).

UChicago dominated the rebounds 43-29, including 19-4 on the offensive boards. But the Maroons committed more turnovers, 24-17.
