Box Score PITTSBURGH – The University of Chicago men's basketball team lost a road game at Carnegie Mellon University 65-57 on Sunday.
The Maroons fell to 6-11 overall and 1-5 in University Athletic Association play. The Tartans improved to 10-6 overall, 3-3 in the UAA.
UChicago went up early at 5-0, 8-5 and 10-8 in the opening five minutes. However, Carnegie Mellon regained the lead at 11-10 and would not surrender it the rest of the game. Eight-consecutive points made the score 22-12 in favor of the hosts midway through the half.
The Maroons cut into the deficit with an 8-2 run – courtesy of six points by sophomore Elliot Paschal – to pull within 32-29. The Tartans went into the halftime break up five (34-29). Senior Zach Munson had an impactful first half with a team-high 11 points. First-year Thomas Kurowski hit 3 of 4 from the field to add seven off the bench.
Senior Brandon Beckman's jumper trimmed the margin back to one point at 34-33. But CMU immediately rattled off nine points in-a-row to go up 43-33.
The visitors kept things interesting and whittled away slowly but surely. Back-to-back jumpers by junior Skyler Twyman made the score 54-51. Once again, Carnegie Mellon had the answer and pushed the lead back to eight points in the final minute of the game, which ended up being the winning margin.
Munson paced the Maroons in scoring for the third time in four games. The senior forward finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Kurowski posted 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals of his own. Paschal concluded with eight points and three rebounds.
UChicago was limited to 35.6 percent shooting from the field, 26.1 percent from three-point range (6-23) and 69.2 percent from the free throw line (9-13). CMU shot 37.0 percent on field goals, 23.8 percent on threes (5-21) and 74.1 percent on free throws (20-27).
The Maroons controlled the boards with a 42-34 advantage. But turnovers proved to be a problem – UChicago committed 19 compared to 10 by the Tartans. The visitors also blocked six shots, with three coming from junior Bryce Hopkins.
