Box Score 2 PITTSBURGH – The University of Chicago volleyball team absorbed a loss to New York University and rebounded to beat Brandeis University on Sunday at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #2.
The Maroons ran their record to 10-8 overall and 4-1 in the UAA.
NYU 3, Chicago 1 (25-18, 15-25, 25-23, 25-22)
UChicago had another nationally-ranked team on the docket, starting off Sunday with a morning match against No. 10-ranked NYU. The Violets kept the UChicago offense at bay in the first set en route to a 25-18 victory. The Maroons then returned the favor in the second set, jumping out to a 13-3 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. The team posted a .250 hitting percentage and ran away with the set 25-15.
The third and fourth sets were close affairs, but NYU claimed the final two points in each to win 25-23 and 25-22.
UChicago hit .120 in the match while the Violets swung at a .170 rate. The Maroons served up eight aces and collected eight blocks.
Sophomores Maggie McInerney and Cami Cox tallied eight kills each, with McInerney totaling a team-high 20 digs. Cox had four blocks and first-year Diya Mishra added six blocks of her own. Setters Maya Patel and Maddie Ryan posted 12 assists apiece. Ryan, sophomore libero Julia Craig and sophomore Nicole Martinez all had 13 digs.
UChicago 3, Brandeis 0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-20)
The Maroons got back on track in the second matchup of the day as they swept the Judges in three. A nip-and-tuck first set went to UChicago after a Brandeis service error set up Cox's kill to claim it 26-24. The second set saw the Maroons breakaway in a big way, ending on a 16-2 run to win 25-13. UChicago kept the momentum in the third set and closed it out 25-20.
The Maroons increased their hitting percentage in each set and finished at .216. Brandeis was limited to a .054 success rate. UChicago compiled eight aces and five blocks as well.
McInerney put up 12 kills and nine digs, while Cox contributed nine kills and two blocks. Senior Ellie Alden had four blocks to go with seven kills in the middle. Patel and Ryan split a combined 31 assists and five aces. Craig was active defensively with 25 digs.
