Box Score WALTHAM, Mass. – Another career-best scoring output from Brandon Beckman helped extend his team's winning streak, as University of Chicago men's basketball beat Brandeis University 78-75 on Friday.
The Maroons (10-12 overall, 5-6 UAA) have won four-straight games. The Judges fell to 11-9 on the season and 2-7 in the University Athletic Association (UAA).
The visitors drew ahead 7-2 in the early going. But the host Judges utilized a 9-0 streak to capture the lead 18-13 midway through the half. Beckman hit a three-pointer and two free throws in quick succession to draw the Maroons to within two. Then junior Bryce Hopkins scored in close to tie things up at 22-22.
Jumpers by senior Zach Munson and Hopkins extended the margin to 29-26, and sophomore Elliot Paschal swished a three to give UChicago a 32-30 advantage at halftime.
It took four-and-a-half minutes for the Maroons to score their next basket, which allowed the home side to get back on top 38-32. First-year Thomas Kurowski got his squad back on the comeback trail with five points on two possessions, and Paschal's jumper soon made it 41-42. Brandeis extended its lead back to six midway through the half at 51-45.
After scoring a career-high 29 points in his previous game versus Emory University, Beckman one-upped that performance on Friday. The senior point guard heated up at the exact right time, scoring 19 points in the final 10 minutes of the game. He did his most damage from outside, hitting 5 of 6 from beyond the arc during that stretch. Beckman concluded the night with a new career-best of 30 points.
UChicago's hot shooting turned the game around. In a four-minute stretch, the visitors went on a definitive 15-1 run that included 11 points from Beckman. Now up 60-52, the Maroons would hold the lead the rest of the way.
Brandeis hung in, chopping the deficit to two points down the stretch. A Beckman trey kickstarted an 11-4 run that kept the hosts at bay, with UChicago leading 78-69 in the final minute.
Beckman made 8 of 11 from three-point range. Hopkins posted 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Munson added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
UChicago shot 50.9 percent from the field, 52.6 percent from beyond the arc (10-19) and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe (12-18). Brandeis made 47.5 percent of its field goals, 28.0 percent of its three-pointers (7-25) and 66.7 percent of its free throws (12-18).
The Judges held narrow advantages in rebounds (33-32) and turnovers (9-10). Brandeis also controlled points in the paint by a 34-18 margin.
