Maroon Men's Basketball Falls to NYU in Overtime 77-73

NEW YORK – New York University forced overtime with a three-pointer in the final seconds and held on in the extra period to top the University of Chicago men's basketball team 77-73 on Sunday.

The Maroons (10-13, 5-7 UAA) saw their four-game win streak come to an end. The Violets (14-9, 4-8 UAA) won their fifth in-a-row.

The Sunday contest was back and forth the whole way – the game featured 22 ties and 24 lead changes. NYU drew ahead early on, but a 10-0 run by UChicago put the visitors on top 13-9. The Maroons would take its largest lead of the half at 24-16 following a three-pointer by senior Brandon Beckman. However, the Violets answered right back with nine-straight points of their own to make it 25-24.

Senior Zach Munson canned a trio of treys and junior Bryce Hopkins hit a jumper to put UChicago back in front at 37-30. Once again, no lead was safe and the teams went into halftime knotted at 37-37. NYU made 7 of 12 from beyond the arc in the half.

Back-to-back threes by senior Ryan Martin and Hopkins made the score 52-49 in favor of the visiting Maroons early in the second half. The momentum swings continued throughout, and the score was tied once more at 63-63.

Sophomore Elliot Pashcal nailed a long-distance jumper, followed by two free throws by Hopkins to give the Maroons a 68-65 advantage in the final minute. However, NYU tied it up from deep with four seconds remaining.

The host Violets held sway in the overtime period, scoring seven of the game's final eight points.

Hopkins finished with a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds while adding three blocks. Munson totaled 16 points and five rebounds. Paschal added 14 points.

The Maroons converted 43.3 percent from the field, 37.0 percent from three-point range (10-27) and 68.8 percent from the free throw line (11-16). The Violets shot 50.8 percent on field goals, 50.0 percent on three-pointers (11-22) and 60.0 percent on free throws (6-10).

NYU won the rebounding battle 37-33 while committing three more turnovers (15-12).
