Box Score ST. LOUIS – The University of Chicago men's basketball team concluded its season with a 70-59 loss at Washington University – St. Louis on Saturday afternoon.
The Maroons finished the year at 10-15 overall and 5-9 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Bears moved to 18-7 (8-6 UAA).
UChicago started strong in the opening nine minutes, taking a 15-5 lead following a free throw by sophomore Elliot Paschal. Senior Brandon Beckman and Paschal both hit three-pointers to extend the margin to 21-9 several minutes later.
However, the Bears immediately embarked on a 14-1 run that put the lead back into their hands at 23-22. WashU would soon head into halftime with a 31-28 advantage. Beckman led the squad with eight points in the half while first-year Thomas Kurowski submitted seven points.
Early in the second half, the Maroons hit three-consecutive jumpers – two by senior Zach Munson and one by Paschal – to draw ahead 34-31. Senior Ryan Martin's jump shot gave his squad a 39-34 lead.
But once again, the Bears found a response with seven-straight points to take over for good. Two Beckman free throws drew UChicago closer at 48-44. WashU's Jack Nolan then scored on four-straight trips down the floor to make the score 60-46. The hosts closed out the contest from there.
Munson collected 14 points and four rebounds, while Beckman posted 13 points and four rebounds. Junior Bryce Hopkins submitted 11 points and nine rebounds. Paschal ended up with nine points.
UChicago shot 39.6 percent from the field, 38.1 percent from three-point range (8-21) and 64.3 percent from the free throw line (9-14). WashU made 47.5 percent of its field goals, 31.8 percent of its threes (7-22) and 62.5 percent of its free throws (5-8).
Rebounds were even at 34-34. UChicago committed 15 turnovers versus 10 by WashU. The home side held a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint.
