Box Score ST. LOUIS – In its season finale, the University of Chicago women's basketball team lost on the road 65-52 at Washington University – St. Louis on Saturday afternoon.
The Maroons concluded the year with a 14-10 overall record and a 7-7 mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Bears finished with a 14-11 record (8-6 UAA).
UChicago fell behind early and were bitten by the turnover bug throughout the first quarter. The Maroons turned the ball over six times and WashU took advantage to build up a 19-5 lead seven minutes in.
The Maroons weathered the storm and methodically sawed away at the deficit, going on a 10-0 run that extended into the second quarter. After junior Peyton Van Soest splashed in a three, UChicago only trailed 22-18. WashU hit a trey of its own in the final minute of the half and went into the break possessing a 30-23 advantage.
The third quarter was a stalemate with both sides scoring 13 points in the period. UChicago closed on an 8-2 streak, which was capped by a three-pointer from senior Klaire Steffens. However, a slow start in the fourth quarter allowed the Bears to draw ahead by as many as 16 points at 55-39. The double-digit lead was maintained the rest of the way.
Steffens finished with 16 points and eight rebounds to pace UChicago. Van Soest submitted 11 points and three rebounds. Junior Grace Hynes tallied seven points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Maroons converted 37.5 percent of their field goals, 27.8 percent of their three-pointers (5-18) and 50.0 percent of their free throws (5-10). The Bears shot 43.9 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from beyond the arc (5-13) and 58.8 percent from the charity stripe (10-17).
WashU held sway in the rebounding (36-29) and turnover (13-17) categories. The hosts led the points off turnovers column 20-11.
