GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Chicago women's tennis team concluded its spring break trip to Texas with a 6-3 victory at Southwestern University on Thursday.
The No. 1-ranked Maroons improved to 10-1, while the No. 14-ranked Pirates dropped to 7-3.
Doubles was a close affair that saw UChicago emerge with a 2-1 lead. The No. 1 duo of first-years Sylwia Mikos and Shianna Guo won their match 8-5, while the No. 2 tandem of senior Eugenia Lee and first-year Nicole Geller earned an 8-6 victory.
Three singles matches went to the Maroons in straight sets – Mikos at No. 1, Guo at No. 2 and senior Lauren Park at No. 5. Geller fought back from a one-set deficit to force a third set and prevail 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
"We dealt with some adversity at the beginning of the match with our emotional leader, Claudia Ng, being a last-second scratch, causing a few lineup changes at match time," Head Coach Jay Tee said. "A less tough team would've had a hard time adjusting, but our group decided it wasn't going to be a big deal and came out strong. Southwestern really fought and made things tough for us, but we played well in the big moments and pulled out a bunch of tight sets."
