Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. – A record-setting effort by Rachel Keefe in goal helped lead the University of Chicago women's lacrosse team to an 11-4 win against Colorado College on Friday.
The No. 23-ranked Maroons improved to 6-1 on the year. The Tigers fell to 7-4.
Keefe was a brick wall for the Maroon defense. Six days after setting a school record with 12 saves versus Tufts University, the UChicago first-year goalie broke that mark with 18 saves against Colorado. She only allowed four goals in the contest for an .818 save percentage. Keefe also scooped up eight ground balls and caused three turnovers.
It took nearly 14 minutes for the Tigers to find the back of the net, which allowed UChicago to build up a 5-0 lead in the meantime. All five goals came from different players.
Colorado pressed a determined attack in the second quarter, outshooting the Maroons 14-4 in the period. However, Keefe was up to the challenge with 11 saves and no goals allowed. Junior Zoe Torok scored the only goal of the period as UChicago took a 6-1 lead into halftime.
The third quarter continued to be a defensive battle with only one goal for each side. Then in the fourth quarter, sophomore Lulu Hardy scored twice and UChicago went up 10-3 in the final minutes of the game. Senior Lally Johnson provided the final tally of the day with 10 seconds remaining.
Shots were nearly even at 31-30 for Colorado, while ground balls were knotted at 22-22. Both squads were particularly adept on clear attempts – the Tigers went 25-for-26 on clears while the Maroons were 20-for-23. Draw controls went in favor of UChicago 11-8.
Hardy led the offense with three goals and an assist. Torok registered two goals and one assist. Sophomore Lizzie Huesman contributed four draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
