Box Score MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The University of Chicago women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end in the NCAA Round of 16 with a 22-4 loss at Middlebury College on Saturday.
The No. 20-ranked Maroons concluded the 2022 campaign with an 18-2 record. The No. 2-ranked Panthers improved to 19-1.
UChicago's record-setting year featured new program highs in wins, winning percentage (.900), goals (350), assists (186), points (536), shot percentage (.502) and draw controls (346). In their fourth year as a varsity sport, the Maroons qualified for the NCAA postseason for the second-straight year.
In Saturday's contest, the Panthers raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. UChicago was able to break onto the scoreboard with six minutes left in the period on first-year Jane Chen's goal. However, that was all the Maroons would get for the remainder of the half. Middlebury remained in control for the rest of the way, taking a 14-1 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the hosts added six more goals in the third quarter and two in the fourth. The Maroons tallied three goals in the fourth quarter themselves. Senior Audrey Kaus scored on a power-play with an assist by sophomore Lizzie Huesman. Sophomore Camille Kuwana found the back of the net off a pass from senior Lally Johnson, and Huesman closed things out with a goal assisted by Kaus in the final minutes.
Middlebury held sway in the box score with advantages in shots (38-15), ground balls (18-12), draw controls (20-8) and turnovers (12-16). The Panthers were a perfect 20-for-20 on clears while the Maroons went 12-for-17.
Huesman collected one goal, one assist and three draw controls. Kaus also finished with one goal and one assist. Junior Charlotte Rapp snagged two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
First-year goalkeeper Rachel Keefe (18-2 record) made 10 saves and grabbed four ground balls.
