CHICAGO – The University of Chicago swimming & diving teams returned from a seven-week break with dominant dual meet victories over Lewis University on Friday night.
The Maroon men won 15 of 16 events to prevail by a score of 233-61. The UChicago women won 14 of 16 events to notch a 223-70 final score line.
UChicago's divers provided big highlights as three women and three men attained a combined 11 NCAA provisional qualifying scores.
Veronica Fong was the top performer on the day as she scored a massive 332.70 points to win the women's one-meter dive. That mark smashed the Myers-McLoraine Pool record (314.18) set by a former NCAA Division 1 Champion, as well as the school record held by last year's NCAA Division III champion Elizabeth Cron (308.17). Fong also triumphed in the three-meter dive with a score of 297.23.
The additional women's provisional qualifying scores came from Cynthia Tang in the one-meter (283.13) and three-meter (268.88), and Lauren Miller in the one-meter (264.38). The men's provisional qualifying marks were provided by double-winner Andrew Chen in the one-meter (310.88) and three-meter (297.45), Spencer Dearman in the one-meter (310.35) and three-meter (297.08), and Tim Sun in the one-meter (308.10) and three-meter (290.70).
On the swimming side of the pool, two men picked up multiple individual victories. Garrett Clasen finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.12) and 200-yard IM (1:52.82). Junichiro Asano was the winner in the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.94) and 500-yard freestyle (4:41.33).
The Maroon women compiled four multi-event winners on the evening. Annabel Olivo swept the backstrokes with a 59.05 in the 100 and 2:09.22 in the 200. Karen Zhao won the shortest race of the night with a time of 24.35 in the 50-yard freestyle, then followed up with a 500-yard freestyle victory in 5:11.19. Filippa Kolokotsa claimed the 100-yard freestyle (53.81) and 200-yard freestyle (1:56.72). Alicia Soosai was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.19) and the 200-yard IM (2:11.75).
