Box Score CHICAGO – The No. 13-ranked University of Chicago women's basketball team won its ninth-straight home game with Sunday's 80-56 victory over Brandeis University.
The No. 13-ranked Maroons improved to 13-1 overall and 2-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Judges fell to 5-9 on the season (0-3 UAA).
A back-and-forth first quarter saw Brandeis take its final lead of the afternoon at 14-13. Once Marissa Powe finished an and-one layup to make it 16-14, the Maroons would keep the advantage for the final 31 minutes.
Midway through the second quarter, Grace Hynes and Sophia North combined for nine points as UChicago scored on five-straight possessions to go up 32-18. The Judges found some momentum to chop the deficit down to 34-29 by the last minute of the half. But Bella Alfaro swished a three from the corner to increase the margin to 37-29 at halftime.
Hynes was a force on the offensive end, consistently backing down her defender into the post and either scoring or drawing the foul. The senior scored eight of her team's opening 10 points of the third quarter to stake the Maroons to a 47-33 advantage. Brandeis could not get any closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
UChicago led by 16 at the start of the fourth quarter and scored 18 points in the final four minutes to emerge with an 80-56 triumph.
Hynes rolled up a game-high 25 points to go with six rebounds and four assists. North compiled 12 points and six rebounds. Alfaro came off the bench to contribute nine points, seven rebounds and five assists. Powe tallied nine points, six rebounds and four steals. Mallory Brodnik added eight points and eight rebounds.
The Maroons shot 40.6 percent from the field, 38.5 percent on three-pointers (10-26) and 90.0 percent on free throws (18-20). The Judges were held to 35.2 percent on field goals, 17.4 percent on threes (4-23) and 58.3 percent from the charity stripe (14-24). UChicago dominated the boards 47-32.
