Men's Basketball Takes Down No. 19 Case Western Reserve for First UAA Win

CLEVELAND, Ohio – University of Chicago's men's basketball program notched its first win in University Athletic Conference (UAA) action on Sunday, defeating No. 19 Case Western Reserve 85-77.

UChicago raced out to an eight-point halftime lead and held off the Spartans down the stretch for its first victory over a ranked opponent of the season. Bryce Hopkins led the scoring effort with 19 points and added 10 rebounds for a double-double. All five starters for the Maroons scored in double-digits as UChicago shot 47.5 percent from the field and went 19-for-24 from the free throw line.

Elliot Paschal added 14 points off the bench in 17 minutes. The Maroons controlled the paint, winning the rebounding battle 47-42 and totaling seven blocks as a team. Defensively, UChicago held Case Western Reserve to 36.8 percent shooting from the field and just 26.7 percent shooting from distance.

The Maroons will have another UAA road weekend, taking on Emory and Rochester on Jan. 27 and Jan. 29, respectively.
