Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. – In the opening conference game of the season, the University of Chicago men's basketball team lost a Saturday road contest 71-54 at Washington University – St. Louis.
The Maroons fell to 7-5 overall and 0-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Bears ran their record to 10-2 on the season (1-0 UAA).
A back-and-forth first half featured a total of 15 lead changes. UChicago went into the halftime break with a narrow 37-36 advantage. But the host Bears began the second half with a 12-1 run that propelled them into a lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
The Maroons shot 39.2 percent from the field in the contest, including 28.6 percent from three-point range (6-21). The Bears made 51 percent of its field goals and 44.4 percent of its threes (4-9). WashU held large margins in rebounding (34-22) and points in the paint (42-22).
Bryce Hopkins paced UChicago with 13 points and eight rebounds. Thomas Kurowski reached double-digit scoring as well with 11 points and three steals.
