Men's Basketball Uses Second-Half Surge To Cruise to Victory over Carnegie Mellon

CHICAGO – University of Chicago's men's basketball program used a dominant second half to defeat Carnegie Mellon University 85-71 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday night.

The Maroons (10-13, 3-9 UAA) kept CMU from running away in the first half before an onslaught of 48 second-half points led UChicago to a 14-point victory. UChicago trailed by one with 18:06 to go and then went on a 20-5 run to open a permanent advantage. 

Bryce Hopkins and Joe Berry matched each other with 19 points to lead the scoring effort. Hopkins racked up a double-double with 13 rebounds. Eamonn Kenah knocked down four threes and finished with 16 points in support. Jackson Piotrowski was also in double-digits with 10 points in 20 minutes off the bench. 

As a team, UChicago was 13-for-30 from deep, a 43.3 percent clip. The Maroons also shot well from the free throw line, making 18 of 20 attempts. 

UChicago welcomes No. 21 Case Western Reserve on Sunday, Feb. 19 at noon inside the Ratner Athletics Center.
