Box Score CHICAGO – In a dramatic contest that came down to the final seconds, the University of Chicago women's lacrosse absorbed an 8-7 defeat versus Kenyon College on Sunday afternoon.
The No. 14-ranked Maroons fell to 5-2. The Owls moved to 8-0.
Offense was at a premium all game long on a cold and overcast day on the Stagg Field turf. UChicago took a 3-1 lead after 11 minutes of play with scores coming from Katie Large, Lulu Hardy and Evelina Swigart. By halftime, however, Kenyon had evened the game up while stifling UChicago's attack. Swigart found the back of the net again right before halftime to account for the 4-4 scoreline.
Only one goal occurred in the third quarter as the Owls took a 5-4 lead into the fourth. Olivia Hung tied things back up in the first five minutes, and the reinvigorated Maroons got goals from Hardy and Zoe Torok in quick succession to grab a 7-6 lead midway through the period.
The Owls were able to find the equalizer with four minutes left and the go-ahead tally off a free position shot with two minutes remaining. UChicago got the ball back in the final 30 seconds, but were stymied as the clock ran out.
The Maroons outshot the Owls 31-22 while also holding a 12-7 draw control advantage. Kenyon committed more turnovers (22-15) and had a slight edge in ground balls (22-20).
Goalie Rachel Keefe (5-2 record) made 10 saves with eight goals allowed. Hailey Klinger led the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Becky Van Kirk, Camille Kuwana and Jane Chen posted two caused turnovers each.
Hardy and Swigart put up two goals and one assist apiece, with Hardy adding four ground balls.
