Box Score CHICAGO – The University of Chicago women's lacrosse team pulled away from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the middle portion of Friday's 16-7 victory.
The No. 16-ranked Maroons improved to 7-2 while the Athenas fell to 5-3.
UChicago never trailed in the contest and held CMS scoreless in the first quarter. By the midpoint of the second quarter, the home side built its lead up to 6-1. Alexis Veldhuis contributed two goals during that span.
After emerging from halftime with a 7-3 lead, the Maroons continued to pull away with five unanswered goals over the next 17 minutes. Lulu Hardy made her presence felt with emphatic drives through traffic as she put up a hat trick of goals in that run.
The two teams exchanged scores in the fourth quarter as the UChicago lead never dropped below eight.
Hardy ended up with a team-high six goals while also grabbing three ground balls. The hosts received two goals each from Evelina Swigart, Charlotte Semlies and Veldhuis. Lizzie Huesman (one goal) and Jane Chen dished out three assists each. Jill Hooey paced the squad with five draw controls.
On the defensive side of the field, Becky Van Kirk caused four turnovers as a disruptive force in the back. Sophie Lynn snagged five ground balls and Hailey Klinger posted four ground balls.
UChicago narrowly led draw controls 14-13 and ground balls 24-22. The Maroons led the shots category 33-26 while CMS committed nine more turnovers (27-18).
Rachel Keefe (7-2 record) got the win in goal with eight saves and four goals allowed. She was particularly effective on free positions, as CMS only converted 2 of 7 chances. Emily Feigen entered the game in relief, making one save in the fourth quarter.
