PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The University of Chicago volleyball team started out the second leg of the UAA Round Robin with two victories on Saturday. The Maroons knocked off No. 1-ranked Washington University-St. Louis 3-2 and then swept Brandeis University 3-0.
The No. 12-ranked Maroons improved to 18-6 overall and 4-1 in UAA action. The Bears ran their record to 22-2 (4-1 UAA) while the Judges are now 14-8 (1-4 UAA).
Chicago came away with a big comeback win to start the day against Washington Univ. The Maroons rallied to win the fourth and fifth sets against the top-ranked team in the nation (25-22, 23-25, 14-25, 28-26, 15-12).
Maren Loe (19 kills) and Katie Huntington (11 kills) paced the offense on the attack. Setter Nikki DelZenero added six kills and nine digs to her 42 assists. Loe was also a presence defensively with 20 digs and three solo blocks. Libero Eirene Kim tallied a season-best 39 digs on the back line. Caroline Brander made three blocks with seven kills. Samantha Brown collected 14 digs.
Chicago won its second match of the day in straight sets over Brandeis (25-21, 25-22, 25-10). Morgan Clark and Loe both tallied eight kills. Katie Trela, Brander and Huntington all blocked three balls each. The digs category was led by Kim with nine, Loe with eight and Brown with eight. Ragine Graves handled the majority of the setting duties to the tune of 21 assists.
The UAA Round Robin will wrap up on Sunday as the Maroons take on University of Rochester at 12 PM (ET) and then Case Western Reserve University at 2 PM (ET).
