Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. -- After battling through regulation and several weather delays, the University of Chicago men's soccer team lost 2-1 in overtime to New York University on Sunday.
The Maroons fell to 7-3-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the UAA. The No. 20-ranked Violets improved to 10-2-1, 2-1-1 in conference play.
Rain, wind and lightning plagued Chicago's final home contest of the season. A lightning delay occurred with 16 minutes left in the first half and then another right at the end of regulation.
Jorge Bilbao staked the hosts to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of the game. Following a foul on NYU, Bilbao spun a free kick from 30 yards right over the wall into the net after the ball bounced off the goalie's hands and in. The freshman midfielder ran his goal streak to three-straight games.
The Violets threatened to tie the game throughout the first half. Two quality chances came 30 seconds apart in the 19th minute for the visitors. A point-blank shot from six yards was saved by Chicago goalie David Cohen, and then Cohen followed up with another stop on a hard header off a corner kick.
NYU appeared to take the lead with eight minutes left in the first half, but the header goal was negated by an offsides call.
The Violets finally broke through to tie the match when a long ball into the box did not get cleared and was booted in from close range in the 58th minute.
With rain pouring down the final 10 minutes of the second half, Chicago got back on track offensively and went hard at the goal up until the final whistle that ended the second half.
Another weather delay pushed off the start of overtime. However, the extra period did not last long as NYU rocketed a shot inside the far post to end the game at the 91:40 mark.
NYU narrowly led the shots category (19-18) and the corner kicks category (6-5). Cohen took the loss in goal while making three saves in the first half and overtime. Fellow Chicago goalie Brett Wiesen also allowed one goal with three saves in his second-half action.
The Maroons will be on the road for their last four matches of the season, beginning with a trip to University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 1 PM next Sunday.
