ELMHURST, Ill. -- The University of Chicago volleyball team won two matches at day one of the Elmhurst Invitational, beating Haverford College 3-0 and Wheaton College 3-1 on Friday.
The No. 9-ranked Maroons (22-7) have won six of their last seven contests. The Fords ran their record to 17-7 and the Thunder fell to 10-18.
In the first match against Haverford, Chicago swept through 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-22).The Maroons served up 11 aces total over the course of three sets. Morgan Barry scored with kills (seven) and her serve (six aces). Katie Huntington had seven kills, 11 digs and two blocks. Kara Conway spiked six kills on 10 attempts. Nikki DelZenero set up her teammates with 32 assists while tallying 10 digs. Defensively, Eirene Kim and Samantha Brown tallied 14 digs and nine digs, respectively.
Chicago won its second match 3-1 over Wheaton (25-14, 25-21, 16-25, 25-22). Brander was unstoppable in the middle with 13 kills and only one error on 24 swings. Loe contributed all-around with a diverse stat line of 12 kills, 11 digs, four blocks, three aces and three assists. Barry totaled nine kills, while Huntington put up eight kills and nine digs. Katie Trela collected three blocks and three kills. DelZenero contributed 40 assists, 14 digs and five kills. Kim dug 14 balls from her libero position. Brown added 13 digs.
Action at the Elmhurst Invite continues on Saturday when the Maroons take on University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 1 PM and Millikin University at 3 PM.
