Maroons men's soccer turns up offense, beats Illinois Wesleyan 4-0

Box Score

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Precise passes and good team movement on the attack helped the University of Chicago men's soccer team pour on the offense in a 4-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University on Tuesday.

The Maroons shut out their second-straight opponent and improved to 4-1-1 on the season. The Titans suffered their first loss after a school-best start of 6-0-0.

Chicago looked dominant in the first half with numerous runs at the goal. Michael Choquette was in the middle of much of it. The sophomore barely missed with a header that hit the left post in the 17th minute. Only one minute later, Choquette sent in a cross to the head of Nic Lopez, but it sailed high over the top.

The hosts were persistent though, setting themselves up for headers in the box and controlling all the action. Jorge Bilbao shot a free kick missile to the top shelf from 28 yards that was saved by the diving goalkeeper in the 24th minute.

Bilbao was at it again in the 28th minute as his blast hit the crossbar and popped straight into the air. When the ball came down, Choquette raced in and headed it across the line to make it 1-0 Chicago.

With 14 minutes remaining in the half, the Maroons seemingly made it 2-0 after Matt Vecchitto scored off a rebound. However, he was called offsides and the goal was nullified.

Chicago led in shots 10-2 at the half. But play evened up much more so in the second half as both teams successfully ran their offenses. Maroons goalie Brett Wiesen came through with a big save less than 90 seconds into the half and denied IWU's Kyle Gorgol from in close in the 10th minute.

The lead increased to 2-0 at 63:00 when defender Jorge Sanchez-Cummings came bursting forward, did a give-and-go with Choquette in the box and then passed wide to Bilbao. The freshman tapped it in unmarked for his team-best fourth goal of the year.

The 86th minute saw the Maroons make it 3-0. Bilbao was instrumental with a pretty assist to Parker Tikson for the score. Less than a minute later, Chicago pressured again and caused an own goal by the Titans.

Chicago ended up outshooting Illinois Wesleyan 22-10. Corner kicks went to the hosts as well, 10-7. Bilbao took a season-high eight shots, including five on goal. Wiesen saved six balls for his third shutout of the season. IWU goalie Tim Hegwood made six saves to take the loss.

The Maroons continues their season with a 2:30 PM home game on Saturday against another CCIW opponent, North Central College.
