Chicago men's soccer rallies from three down, loses 4-3 at Emory

Box Score

ATLANTA, Ga. -- After making a spirited comeback from a three-goal deficit, the University of Chicago men's soccer team forced double overtime but lost at Emory University 4-3 on Saturday.

The Maroons ran their record to 5-2-2 and 0-1-0 in the UAA. The Eagles improved to 6-4-1 overall, 1-0-0 in the UAA.

The opening half lacked much offense, with the hosts leading in shots 7-2 as neither side cracked the scoreboard.

Emory scored first in the second half with a 49th minute tally by Dylan Price. The Eagles eventually built up their lead to 3-0 thanks to goals in the 63rd minute and the 67th minute.

Exactly a minute after the hosts scored their third goal, Chicago came through with its first. Nick Codispoti hit a free kick to the head of Alexis Onfroy, who scored the header to make it 3-1.

The Maroons found new life in the 76th minute when an Emory foul gave Jorge Bilbao a penalty kick that he put away to cut the lead down to 3-2. The comeback climaxed in dramatic fashion. Nic Lopez crossed the ball into the box and Kyle Kurfirst netted the tying goal with only 1:06 remaining in regulation. It marked the second-straight game that Kurfirst netted the tying goal to force overtime late in the game.

Both overtimes remaining scoreless as the two teams looked to be on their way to a tie. But the Eagles pulled out the win in the final 30 seconds of the second overtime with a header goal.

The shot totals went in favor of Emory 19-13, while the Maroons led in corner kicks 5-4. Chicago's two goalies split the game - David Cohen played the first half and did not need to make any saves, while Brett Wiesen saved two balls and allowed the four goals in the second half and overtimes.

Chicago come back home for a four-game stretch, starting on Oct. 6 with a 1:30 PM game versus Carnegie Mellon University.
