CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago volleyball team jumped out to a 2-0 start to the conference season after the first day hosting the UAA Round Robin on Saturday.
The No. 14-ranked Maroons ran their record to 15-4 overall and 2-0 in the UAA. They defeated Carnegie Mellon University 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 29-27) and then beat New York University 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 15-25, 25-13).
In its first match against Carnegie Mellon, Chicago cruised the first two sets but then found themselves down 23-21 in the third set. However, the Maroons dug in and came up with clutch points to outlast the Tartans 29-27 in the deciding set.
Maren Loe and Morgan Barry scored 14 kills and 13 kills, respectively. Loe added two service aces, eight digs and three blocks. Barry collected 12 digs. Setter Nikki DelZenero distributed 35 assists. Eirene Kim tallied 16 digs and two service aces from her libero position.
The Maroons won their second match over New York University 3-1 after brushing off a sloppy third set. Loe and Caroline Brander tied for the kill lead with 11 each. Loe also added 12 digs, four total blocks and three service aces. Brander was also effective with her serve (three aces) and blocking (three total). DelZenero compiled 33 assists and 14 digs. Katie Trela and Barry were also effective on the block with four total and three total, respectively. Kim ended up with 18 digs.
The Maroons wrap up action on Sunday with a Noon match against Emory University.
