Day 2 Results
CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago volleyball team finished up hosting the UAA Round Robin with a 3-0 loss (27-25, 25-23, 25-11) to Emory University on Sunday.
The No. 14-ranked Maroons ran their record to 15-5 overall and 2-1 in the UAA. The No. 6-ranked Eagles improved to 19-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
After playing two matches on Saturday, Chicago's final opponent on Sunday was Emory. The Maroons started out very sharp and built a 6-1 lead with an efficient offense. The Eagles got its offense on track and took a 12-11 lead. The two sides went back and forth from there. A kill from Caroline Brander, a block, and kill from Maren Loe put the hosts up 24-21. But Emory came roaring back to tie at 24-24 and then took the set 27-25.
In set number two, Emory led early 4-1 and Chicago swung the momentum back to tie at 5-5. The Eagles maintained a slim lead until the score was knotted at 20. Some big kills from Brander and an ace tied the score once again 23-23. However, the Eagles came through with clutch points to grab the set 25-23.
The third set was all Eagles, as they built an 11-3 lead and cruised in for a 25-11 victory.
Brander put up the most efficient stats for the Maroons with 10 kills and two errors on 18 attempts. The senior middle blocker also had two service aces. Katie Trela spiked eight kills with four total blocks. Sette Nikki DelZenero handed out 24 assists and served up three aces. Eirene Kim tallied 19 digs from her libero position.
Chicago will play its final home matches of the season on Saturday, Oct. 6 with a 10 AM match against Endicott College and a 2 PM match versus Elmhurst College.
