UChicago men's soccer opens UAA action with 2-1 win at Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Nic Lopez tallied a pair of header goals for the University of Chicago men's soccer team as the Maroons opened conference play with a 2-1 victory at No. 17-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday.

The Maroons improved to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action. The Tartans dropped to 7-2-1 overall, 0-1-0 in the UAA.

UChicago grabbed the lead 10 minutes into the game. Junior midfielder Nic Lopez scored a header off a corner kick from junior forward Matt Vecchitto. Less than four minutes later, Carnegie Mellon evened the score at 1-1 off a free kick that bounced over the goalkeeper and into the net. At the half, the Maroons and the Tartans took six shots apiece.

The score remained tied until the 79th minute when Lopez struck again with another header goal, with the assist coming from junior midfielder Nick Codispoti.

Carnegie Mellon ended the game with a 14-10 shot advantage and a 6-2 corner kick edge. UChicago sophomore goalkeeper Brett Wiesen (6-1-1) made four saves with one goal allowed. Sophomore goalkeeper David Cohen came in for the final 33 seconds of the game and did not record any statistics.
