Box Score WHEATON, Ill. -- A rebound goal by senior forward Kyle Kurfirst in the final minute of the game gave the University of Chicago men's soccer team a 1-0 victory at No. 13-ranked Wheaton College on Tuesday.
The Maroons kept their perfect record intact at 3-0-0. The Thunder dropped to 2-2-0.
Both sides played evenly throughout the evening, alternating offensive runs with counter attacks. UChicago notched a goal in the first half, but an offsides call by the officials took it off the scoreboard. About two minutes later, freshman forward Brenton-Neal Desai made a run on goal and his shot pinged off the left post.
When Wheaton threatened on its offensive attack, Maroons goalie Brett Wiesen came up with big timely saves to keep the match scoreless. The sophomore made several diving stops and ended up with six saves on the night.
Overtime loomed as the final minute of regulation ticked down. However, UChicago set itself up for one more quality chance by earning a corner kick. Junior forward Matt Vecchitto's kick found the head of junior midfielder Nic Lopez, and his header was saved by the goalie. But the deflection came to Kurfirst and the junior pounced from five yards out to score the game winner with 37 seconds left.
The Thunder ended up with the edge in shots (9-8) and corner kicks (6-2). Wiesen improved his record to 3-0-0 in goal.
