Maroon wrestling goes 3-0 at Lakeland Duals

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – The University of Chicago wrestling team dominated at the Lakeland College Duals and came away with three victories on Saturday. The Maroons improved their dual meet record to 5-3 on the year.

"The teams had some people who weren't in their lineups, but so did we," said Head Coach Leo Kocher. "What I was really happy about was that nobody got an easy match against us. We only wrestled 20 total matches, but everyone was competitive. I was pleased with the effort. Also, Mario Palmisano handled a couple fairly good heavyweights and he's looking really good. He's 6-0 now at heavyweight, so that's good to see."

UChicago's closest dual of the day was its first against Milwaukee School of Engineering. Each team won four matches head-to-head and the Maroons picked up two forfeit wins. Freshmen Devan Richter (125 pounds) and Samuel Koenig (157 pounds) both picked up first-period pins. UChicago ended up winning by a score of 31-12.

In the second match versus host Lakeland, the Maroons took the first four matches via forfeit and cruised to a 43-6 victory. Freshman Nick Ferraro pinned his 174-pound opponent in the first period and senior heavyweight Mario Palmisano scored a major decision, 17-3.

UChicago wrapped up the day with a 41-6 win over University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Richter and Palmisano bookended the dual with pins in the first period. Ferraro also earned a technical fall victory at 184 pounds.

Richter, Palmisano, Ferraro and senior Tim Salazar all finished with 3-0 records on the day.
