NEW YORK – In a match-up between two nationally-ranked conference foes, the No. 16-ranked University of Chicago volleyball team lost 3-1 against No. 2-ranked Washington University-St. Louis on Sunday.

The Maroons (14-5 overall) wrapped up weekend action at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #1 with a 2-1 record. The Bears improved to 17-1 overall and 3-0 in the UAA.

Washington-St. Louis 3, UChicago 1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-22, 25-19)

The opening set was nip and tuck the whole way with the two teams exchanging leads. Tied at 24 all, UChicago delivered with kills from senior outside hitter Jasmine Mobley and freshman outside hitter Audrey Scrafford to clinch the set, 26-24. The second set was almost identical in momentum swings and late in the proceedings, the score was knotted at 23-23. This time, Washington-St. Louis came out the victor 25-23 to even the match at a set apiece.

The Maroons hung tough with the Bears all throughout the third set as well. But Washington-St. Louis went up a set at 25-22 and then used that momentum to finish off the victory in the fourth, 25-19.

As a team, UChicago hit for a .245 percentage (52 kills, 15 errors, 151 attempts). The Maroons totaled 64 digs, five blocks, two aces and nine service errors. On the other side of the net, the Bears hit .286 (64-20-154) with 75 digs, nine blocks, five aces and nine service errors.

Scrafford paced the team with 17 kills and Mobley tallied 14 kills on only 29 attempts. Senior outside hitter Maren Loe posted 15 kills, nine digs and three blocks. Senior setter Ragine Graves gave out 45 assists and collected 16 digs. Junior libero Mary Claire Tuohy added 12 digs of her own.
