Box Score CHICAGO – Ryan Yetishefsky netted a pair of goals and the University of Chicago men's soccer team concluded Senior Day with a 3-0 victory against No. 7-ranked New York University on Sunday.
The No. 16-ranked Maroons improved to 9-4-1 overall and 2-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Violets (9-3-1 overall, 3-1 UAA) absorbed their first conference loss.
Prior to the start of the match, UChicago honored its six seniors on the Stagg Field turf – Ben Brandt, Peyton Lane, Vicente Mateus, Sahil Modi, Kyle Ruark and Calvin Walters. The Maroons have compiled a 58-11-9 overall record (.801 winning percentage) since the beginning of the 2017 season, with three NCAA postseason appearances.
UChicago was on its game from the outset and struck the opening blow less than seven minutes in. A long counterattack feed found first-year Ryan Shea speeding down the right sideline. Once he reached the end line, Shea centered directly to Yetishefsky in front for the tidy finish.
In the 16th minute, a wipeout slide tackle by NYU in the box was whistled and a penalty kick was awarded to UChicago. Junior Naz Kabbani coolly buried the shot to make it 2-0.
While NYU managed eight shots on the afternoon, many were from distance and none on goal. UChicago's defense tightened up on every occasion and cleared out the threats. Walters came up several times to intercept aerial balls sent into the box. On the opposite side, nine of the Maroons' 12 shots were on goal.
The dagger arrived in the 62nd minute. Sophomore Robbie Pino received the ball on the counterattack and dashed to the end line up the right wing. His centering pass found Yetishefsky who scored a swinging volley in close to make it 3-0.
Along with their 12-8 shots advantage, the Maroons led corner kicks 5-2. Walters secured his sixth shutout in goal to improve to 7-4-1 on the season.
