Box Score PITTSBURGH – The University of Chicago men's soccer team stretched its win streak to four games with a 2-0 victory at Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday afternoon.
The No. 14-ranked Maroons improved to 12-4-1 overall and 4-2 within the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Tartans dropped to 6-6-3 (0-5-1 UAA).
UChicago's defense locked down CMU from the get-go and did not surrender any shot attempts until the 78th minute. The Maroons only allowed two shots total and none on goal.
After a scoreless first half, the visitors got on the board at the 67:11 mark. Off a free kick, junior Richard Gillespie skyed a header high up in the air that headed on frame. The Tartan goalkeeper got his hands on the ball, but it slipped from his grasp on the goal line and Gillespie was there to tap it in.
The insurance tally came in the 75th minute. First-year Ryan Shea made a quick move past his defender on the right wing and swung a centering pass into the middle of the box. Fellow first-year Lyndon Hu was in position to volley a right-footed shot past the goalkeeper for his first collegiate goal.
Senior goalkeeper Calvin Walters (10-4-1) recorded the clean sheet and did not see a shot on goal in his 90 minutes. The Maroon defense increased its shutout total to nine this season.
UChicago outshot CMU 13-2 and held a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.
