Fred Speik was one of the first All-Americans in UChicago football history. Alongside teammate Walter Eckersall, Speik garnered consensus All-American honors as a senior in 1904. He is one of 10 consensus All-Americans in program history. Speik played end for legendary head coach Amos Alonzo Stagg and the Maroons compiled a 34-9-4 record (.766 winning percentage) over his four years on the team. After graduation, he was an assistant coach to Stagg from 1905-07 and then took over as head football coach at Purdue University from 1908-09.
