Jim Haydon excelled as a decathlete in men's track and field. He finished in the top six in the decathlon at the USTFF National Championships in 1971 (sixth place) and 1972 (fourth place). Upon graduation, Haydon ranked first in school history in the 110-meter hurdles, second in the 400-meter hurdles and third in the shot put. He still ranks in UChicago's top 10 in all three categories. Haydon was also a two-time Bond Medal winner in 1968 and 1969.
