As a junior, he was the national runner-up in the long jump with a career-best leap of 7.69 meters. Brooks was also a two-time Big Ten Conference titlist in the long jump (1932 and 1933). He still holds the school's outdoor long jump record at 7.69 meters - it is the best mark by nearly a foot (0.29 meters).
