Virgil "Beau" Gist was one of the best middle distance runners in the country for the Maroon men's track and field team. Gist's crowning moment came in 1928 when he won the national championship at 880 yards. He was a three-time All-American at that distance, finishing NCAA runner-up in 1929 and third in 1927. His efforts in 1929 helped UChicago place 10th as a team at the national meet. Gist was also a captain on the Maroon basketball team. He led the team in scoring three times and ranked as a top 10 scorer in the Big Ten in his final two seasons.
